What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using your height and weight to estimate body fat. It's a useful screening tool to identify potential weight problems, but it's not a diagnostic tool.

BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes or muscular individuals may have a high BMI despite being healthy. For a complete picture of your health, consider factors like body fat percentage, waist circumference, and overall fitness level.

The formula:
Metric: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²
Imperial: BMI = (weight (lbs) / height (in)²) x 703

BMI Limitations

  • Doesn't account for muscle mass (athletes may show as "overweight")
  • Doesn't consider fat distribution (visceral vs subcutaneous)
  • May not be accurate for elderly individuals
  • Doesn't reflect overall health or fitness level
  • Should be used alongside other health assessments
